With one foot planted firmly in jazz and the other in hip-hop and R&B, Robert Glasper continues to stun audiences with his inventive take on jazz. Glasper’s extensive career in the music business ranges from producing albums to serving as a music director. The Los Angeles Times says “he’s equally comfortable in the worlds of hip-hop and jazz,” praising his ability to build a bridge between his two musical touchstones. Describing the Robert Glasper Experiment’s latest project, Black Radio, Glasper says it is “more of an urban, hip-hop, soul kind of vibe, but the spine of it all is still jazz.” The result is a musical fusion that fans of each genre love and appreciate.
Born to R&B/Soul music royalty, most people know Lalah Hathaway simply as the daughter of late soul music legend, Donny Hathaway. But there is more to her than that. A trained pianist and vocalist, she is a graduate of the Berklee School of Music and her career has spanned two decades. 21 years after the release of her first LP, her career continues to thrive. 2011 marked the release of her 5th solo studio album, Where It All Begins, in which she effortlessly delivers her trademark sound, effortlessly fusing elements of R&B, jazz and pop.
Like the blazin’ ball of cosmic energy, songstress/pianist/composer Avery*Sunshine burst onto the scene with the release of her self-titled debut project in 2010. A consummate musician, Avery*Sunshine pours light onto the simple complexities of life with a soulful truth-telling that is pensive and real. The CD’s sound includes an amalgamation of jazz, gospel and soul and features legendary vibraphonist and funk-soul jazz composer Roy Ayers. Chosen as iTunes’ 2010 BEST and featured among “What We’re Listening To” on the iTunes homepage, The CD has also received countless glowing reviews from notable publications such as The Washington Post and USA Today.
