In partnership with the Farragut Houses Tenants’ Association and the Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival, @MoCADA’s April Public Exchange Series will be celebrating Jazz Appreciation Month with an outdoor concert by Grammy Award winning trumpeter and producer, Maurice Brown, at 2pm at the Farragut Houses Basketball Courts on Navy and Court Streets.
MoCADA’s Public Exchange Series brings dynamic arts programming and performances to Public Housing developments in Brooklyn each month. The goal is to appeal to the community at large in order to break down the barriers and misconceptions that exist around public housing in general. Recently funded by The Rockefeller Foundation, this program has expanded from MoCADA’s summer series: Soul of Brooklyn Week, to a year-round program that includes film screenings, dance performances, art workshops, and live performances

Both a movement workshop and an exploration of African dance traditions in contemporary visual culture, this four-week course taught by MoCADA educator Mihoby Rabeharison is designed to teach students how to use choreography as creative expression. eMERGING features the works of visual artists and directors Kajahl Benes, Kudzanai Chiurai, Delphine Diallo, Modou Dieng, Hassan Hajjaj, dream hampton, Pieter Hugo, Hycide, Kahlil Joseph, Terence Nance, Cinque Northern, Kambui Olajimi, Storyboard P, Ebony G. Patterson, and Hank Willis Thomas, and music by Blitz the Ambassador, Flying Lotus, Seu Jorge, Just A Band, Spoek Mathambo, THEESatisfaction, and others. eMERGING draws connections between visual art and music, but also highlights the interconnected nature of contemporary Black dance, film, literature, and culinary art through performances and events throughout the duration of the exhibition.
eMERGING will be on display at MoCADA from February 14 to May 27, 2013, and will include a variety of public programs including, concerts, film screenings, kids workshops, and more. Check out the full list of public programs.

Join MoCADA and NY Writers Coalition on Tuesday, March 19 at 6:30 p.m. for another powerful installment of the Writing Aloud Reading Series. Writing Aloud unites writers from the NYWC community with award-winning authors, allowing once silenced stories to be heard by new audiences around New York City.
This season’s reading takes place in MoCADA’s gallery space and features readers from NYWC’s workshops at 80 Arts, 14th Street Y, and Serendipity sharing their work alongside poet Arisa White. Arisa will read from two collections, Hurrah’s Nest and A Penny Saved, and both will be available in MoCADA’s museum shop afterward. Plus, hang out a bit for the book-signing afterward! RSVP here.
